Oil Painting by Gunnar Nyman (1942)
Oil painting on canvas by Finnish artist Gunnar Nyman, signed “G. Nyman ’42”. The painting depicts a young man with a startled, almost frightened expression, set against a dark, loosely painted background. The expressive face gives the work a strong and slightly unsettling character. The colours used in this painting are beautiful. We brought this piece back from Finland on our recent trip.
Gunnar Nyman was a Finnish painter whose work includes a number of signed oil paintings from the 1940s. His paintings from this period are relatively uncommon, and a 1949 oil on canvas by Nyman is held in the Turku City Art Collection. This painting from 1942 is an earlier example of his work.
Nyman was married to the well-known Finnish designer Gunnel Nyman, and the couple lived and worked in Helsinki. Gunnel was one of the important figures in Finnish design of the 1930s and 1940s, particularly known for her furniture, lighting and later glass designs.
The painting is in good condition with normal signs of age and use. Please see the pictures as part of the product description.
