The Panton Chair is an S-shaped plastic chair designed by Danish designer Verner Panton in the 1960s. This is world's first moulded plastic chair and is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Danish Design.
The idea of designing a stackable plastic chair made all in one piece was one of Verner Panton's dreams. It is said he was inspired in particular by a neatly stacked pile of plastic buckets. In 1956 he designed the S Chairs which is considered to be a forerunner of the Panton Chair. He saw it as a piece of furniture where the back, seat and legs were made of one continuous piece. The Panton chair was first produced in 1965.
The first Panton Chair was created from a plaster-cast in collaboration with Dansk Akrylteknik in 1960. Later in the mid-60s he met Willi Fehlbaum from Vitra who, unlike many other manufacturers, was fascinated with the drawings of Panton's drawings of his legless chair in plastic, rather than wood which was the favoured material at that time. Panton and Felhbaum worked closely to produce a cold-pressed model using polyester strengthened with fibreglass. For the first time, an entire chair was produced in one piece, without any legs. It became known as a free-swinger. The first rather heavy model, which required substantial finishing work, was subsequently improved an adapted to industrial production using thermoplastic polystyrene which led to a vast reduction in cost. Vitra initiated production of the final version which was sold by the Herman Miller Furniture Company in 1968.
In 1979 production stopped already for the Panton chair as it became apparent that polystyrene was no sufficiently durable and began to look shabby over time. Four years later in 1983 production started again as the Panton Chair Classic. This time made from polyurethane structural foam which was more expensive. Finally, in 1999, Vitra used plypropylene for manufacturing the Pantin Plastic Chair.
These four chairs are from the first production for Herman Miller and made from polystyrene. Three of the chairs are marked with 1978 and one of them is even older and marked with 1973. The latter one is slightly more white, but when seen around a table this is not noticeable.
All four chairs are in great condition as can be seen in the pictures, despite the change in material in 1979. One of the chairs has a small crack on the side of the chair, but this is barely noticeable and is nothing major.
