La Fonda side chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller. This side chair was essentially an adaptation of the fiberglass DSL chairs. For the opening of a new restaurant in New York in 1961, the La Fonda chair was commissioned by Alexander Girard.
Although the series was an adaptation of the existing plastic Eames chairs, the design of the La Fonda series had two distinctive conditions. Firstly, Girard determined that the chairs shouldn't be taller than the height of the tabletop, so they would be hidden from view. The second condition came from Charles, as he wanted a pedestal base that would contain multiple columns.
This resulted in a beautiful, almost 'squashed' chair with a smaller top that was reduced in height by 3 inches (7.62 cm) and with a new multi-columned special aluminum base that really defined the overall look of the chair.
Girard's restaurant had a unique and pleasantly bright, cheerful design that represented his love of folk art. Sadly the restaurant closed in 1963 but the chairs remained available for a further 11 years, finally being discontinued in 1974.
This chair has a chromed base with the original blue upholstery, which is in good condition. The upholstery has some marks of usage as can be seen in the pictures.
