Gispen 116 Dining Chair by Wim Rietveld
Gispen model 116 dining chair designed by Wim Rietveld. This chair was designed for the series: "Furniture for the simple interior", in 1953. The models 116 and 216 (with armrests) were a big success. The chair is made with a solid round-steel frame with a curved birch plywood back and seat. The back and seat do not have screws through them which gives it their clean look, this is accomplished by rubber suspension blocks that mounted on the back for extra comfort.
This example has a beige lacquered frame and is in great condition.
Wim Rietveld (1924-1985) is the son of architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld. His designs attracted the company Gispen, where he designed office furniture from 1953 till 1956. Later they widened the assortment and he also designed more living furniture and lighting. Wim always looked for the perfect balance between functionality and solid design.
